THE PROJECT
The main objective of WAVE is to develop an integrated approach including microbial-based bioprocesses towards dairy WAstewater reuse and conVErsion into new bioplastics (WAVE).
WAVE is envisaged as a promising process to treat wastewater while generating: i) treated water effluent with low salinity to irrigate urban green spaces and, ii) bioplastics. WAVE aims at a synergy between resource recovery and water reuse by concomitantly assessing the applicability of produced effluents and biocompounds.
SPECIFICS OBJETIVES
S01
Attaining maximum conversion of the organic fraction in the dairy wastewater into SCFAs by alleviating salinity toxicity for anaerobic fermenters.
S02
Producing high quantities of SCP in D. hansenii from SCFAs.
S03
Obtaining a water effluent with low salinity.
S04
Validating the proposed microbial-based technologies in an industrial relevant environment.
S05
Applying obtained water after yeast fermentation for landscaping.
S06
Producing bio-based and degradable plastics from SCP.
S07
Evaluating the sustainability of the proposed technology and demonstrating its contribution to a Circular Economy.
S08
Fostering market and policy changes to improve sustainable economic growth.
WORK PACKAGES
The project activities are structured into seven work packages, constructed to allow effective delivery of the project aims.
